How do I convert GIF to PNG?

Add your GIF files to the converter on this page. PNG is already selected, so each file converts as soon as you add it. Then download each PNG, or download all of them as one ZIP.

Is this GIF to PNG converter free?

Yes. You need no account, and there is no limit on the number of files, because your own computer does the work. The PNG files have no watermark.

Are my GIF files uploaded to a server?

No. The converter runs libvips, an open-source image library, in your browser with WebAssembly. Your images never leave your device.

Does the PNG keep the transparent background?

Yes. PNG stores transparency, so a GIF with a transparent background stays transparent in the PNG.

What happens to an animated GIF?

The converter saves the first frame of an animated GIF as a still PNG. It does not make an animated PNG (APNG), and it does not save each frame as a separate file.

Is the PNG larger than the GIF?

Usually a little. A GIF has at most 256 colors, and the PNG stores the same pixels. In our test, still GIFs became PNGs 1.1 to 2.4 times larger. The first frame of an animated GIF is much smaller than the whole animation.

Does converting to PNG make the image better?

No. The PNG keeps every pixel of the GIF, but it cannot add the colors that the GIF did not keep. It looks the same as the GIF.

Why convert GIF to PNG?

Some apps, print services, and upload forms take PNG but not GIF, and many image editors open a PNG with fewer problems. PNG is also the better format for a logo or an icon that you will edit again.

Can I convert a GIF to JPG or WebP?

Yes. The converter takes GIF, PNG, JPG, AVIF, and TIFF images. Choose JPEG or WebP before you add your files. Keep PNG or WebP for a transparent GIF, because JPG does not store transparency.

How do I get PNG images from my app?

A Bannerify template renders to PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. You choose the format in each API request, so your app gets PNG files with no conversion step.

Is this tool open source?

Yes. The source code is on GitHub at ducan-ne/image-converter, under the MIT license. You can read how it works, report a problem, or run it yourself.

Doing this a thousand times?

A Bannerify template renders your images as PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one API call, so your app never converts files by hand.
