What does a DPI converter do?

It changes the DPI value that an image file stores. The DPI tells a printer how many pixels go into one inch, so it sets the print size. This converter changes only that value: the pixels and the quality stay the same.

How do I change the DPI of an image?

Choose a JPEG or PNG above, enter the new DPI, and choose Download with this DPI. You get a copy of the file with the new DPI and the same pixels.

How do I increase the DPI of an image to 300?

Enter 300 and download the copy. The image keeps its pixels, so its print size gets smaller: a 1200 × 1800 pixel photo prints at 4 × 6 inches at 300 DPI, and at 16.7 × 25 inches at 72 DPI.

Does changing the DPI change the quality?

No. The converter changes only the DPI fields. It does not decode the image or save it again, so the pixels and the quality stay exactly the same.

Will 300 DPI make a small image sharp in print?

No. The DPI only tells the printer how large to print the pixels. For a sharp print at 300 DPI, the image needs 300 pixels for each inch, for example 2400 × 3000 pixels for 8 × 10 inches. Upscaling a small image adds pixels, but no real detail.

Which DPI should I choose?

300 for photos, flyers, cards, and other prints seen up close. 150 for large posters seen from afar. When a print shop or an upload form asks for a DPI, use the value that it asks for.

What does the converter change in the file?

It writes the new DPI into each DPI field of the file: JFIF, EXIF, XMP, and Photoshop data in a JPEG, and the pHYs chunk, EXIF, and XMP in a PNG. So apps read the new value, whichever field they use. The image data is not decoded or saved again.

How do I check the DPI of an image?

Choose the image above: the converter shows the DPI that the file stores and its print size before you change anything. The image DPI checker shows the same, with answers about print sizes.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The converter changes the file in your browser, and the image never leaves your device.

Can I change the DPI of a WebP, GIF, or TIFF file?

Not in this converter. Convert the file to JPG or PNG first with the free image converter, then set the DPI here.
