What is Open Graph?

Open Graph is a set of meta tags in the head of a page. Facebook made it, and X, LinkedIn, Slack, Discord, and iMessage read it too. The tags tell them which title, description, and image to show when someone shares the link.

Which tags does a link preview need?

og:title, og:description, and og:image, plus twitter:card with summary_large_image for the large card on X. Add og:image:width and og:image:height too, so that Facebook can show the image on the first share.

Why does my link show no image?

Check these first: the og:image URL is absolute and opens in a private browser window, the page does not need a login, the file is under 5 MB, and robots.txt does not block the crawler of the network.

I fixed the tags. Why does a network still show the old preview?

Networks cache what they scrape. Ask Facebook to scrape the page again in its Sharing Debugger, and LinkedIn in its Post Inspector. X can keep the old card for up to 7 days.

Does this checker cache the result?

No. Every check fetches the page again and reads its head, so you see your last change.

How do I make an og:image for every page?

Make one image with the free OG image generator. For many pages, copy a template into Bannerify and sign one image URL per page. Bannerify renders each image the first time a network asks for it.

Doing this a thousand times?

Sign one image URL per page, and Bannerify renders the og:image of every page from your own template.
